    Description

    COLD WAR
    .  Rare and large archive of 240 vintage glossy photographs and 39 celluloid negatives depicting the development and testing of the “Honest John” rocket, the first surface-to-surface nuclear missile.  Circa 1960s, contain handwritten descriptions on the verso of most, stamped on the verso of all, measure 5 by 4 to 4 by 3 inches, and in very fine condition with the photos having been curved, several stapled together, and a few abraded.
    RARE ARCHIVE OF 240 VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS AND 39 NEGATIVES DEPICTING THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF THE FIRST SURFACE-TO-SURFACE NUCLEAR MISSILE
    Major General Holger Toftoy, who oversaw the development of the “Honest John” missile project, met a Texan on a trip to White Sands Missile Range.  The Texan had a reputation for “tall tales,” but if anyone questioned his stories, he would announce that he was known as “Honest John.”  Since at the time the need for this missile project was being questioned, General Toftoy thought “Honest John” would be an appropriate name.  Based on our research, this is very rare and possibly the only collection of its kind.
