    Description

Make no mistake: if there’s a piece of an automobile that Phil Remington can’t fix, then he can make a perfect copy to replace it. If he can’t copy the piece, then you will have to wait until God creates another. “He is the best fabricator in the world, and that’s not his strong point,” says Carroll Smith, a long time racing consultant who worked with Remington on the Ford assault on Le Mans. “His strong point is incredible intuitive feel for machinery. When there is a problem, by the time other people realize it, he’s already made six fixes.
The contents of this book is a tribute to Phil Remington. It is a collection of reminiscences sent in by colleagues and friends who agreed to share their personal stories of the man they universally admired, respected and honored. He shared his incredible craftsmanship, knowledge, and mechanical genius with generosity and patience to those of us smart enough to pay attention. I think we all came away having learned something of value from having known him. You will find some repetitions in the book as I wanted to keep the stories intact, as they were written, from the perspective of each contributor. I enjoyed preparing this book and hope you will enjoy the memories expressed by those who knew him.                       Phil Henny
“His craftsmanship was so good. He never lost his brain and he could remember what happened in 1970 or 1980. He recalled all the little things. He was amazing. And he was so talented and such an honest man.” “He wasn’t always easy to get along with nor was he easy on himself either but he was a tireless worker and very competitive. If he got a cut he’d just wash it off with parts cleaner and go back to work.” Remington’s presence and toolbox were fixtures at AAR and he was still coming to work four days a week at age 90.                                        Dan Gurney.
“He is probably right now up there designing more efficient gates for heaven with Shelby hustling the funds for the project.” Phil Remington was a very unique and sterling individual. His contribution as a development engineer to Shelby American definitely helped propel Carroll Shelby to several racing championships in both America and Europe. Phil’s knowledge of racing and fabrication was an important factor in Shelby American’s climb to success. During test sessions at the tracks I would see him at the pit wall bending a piece of aluminum and shape it into an air duct on the spot. Phil, or STP, his nickname, short for Super Twitch Phil, because he was always busy working, was greatly respected and well liked throughout the whole racing industry. During the time I worked at Shelby’s under Phil’s guidance, along with many others, we witnessed him turn many racecars into winning machines. He would always lend his very quick hands or know-how at anytime he was needed. When he was away and we were left to do our own engineering, we were always glad to have him look over our projects and give his input upon his return. He did everything well. Phil is greatly missed by anyone whose life he touched. He is probably right now up there designing more efficient gates for heaven with Shelby hustling the funds for the project. Phil, it was a great pleasure working with you             Charlie Agapiou
Phil Remington is remembered by his Friends. From the early Cobra to the famous Le Mans victories, Phil was there.
Carroll Shelby said: “I couldn’t have done anything without REM”!
